COMFORT KEEPERS OF WALLINGFORD, CT BELIEVES OUR ELDERLY CLIENTS WOULD BENEFIT FROM FUN ACTIVITIES THAT WOULD KEEP SENIORS MINDS WORKING AND BODIES STRONG BY USING GAMES AND EXERCISE IN A NON-MEDICAL SETTING FOR HEALTHY AGING

By Carol Carbutti

The following are a few positive ideas from Carol Carbutti the owner of the Comfort Keepers office in Wallingford, CT about ways to bring out the personality, energy and humor in our elderly seniors with simple activities.  Our homemaking company and personal care services promote interactive companions who can take pleasure in visits with failing, forgetful, or weak senior citizens by using a little effort and creativity.

All we need to do is introduce new gadgets to engage elderly seniors like a digital camera.  By teaching new hobbies an elderly senior citizen they will be able to choose the type of pictures they wish to take.   When the pictures are processed the senior client will be able to share his story with other members of the family.

It is so important for older at home senior citizens to remain active.  For our elderly parents, reversal of the brain shrinkage that occurs as people age is just one benefit of greater in-home physical activity according to the Journal of Gerontology.  Another article in this same journal showed that seniors who are at risk of losing independent functions can benefit from a structured exercise program.  It is very important to encourage seniors to maintain regular exercise routines by asking an expert, like a medical professional such as a physical therapist for appropriate equipment and movements.  If walks are appropriate, a stroll once a nice day is a fun and easy way to pass time.

There are a few simple ideas for engaging physically frail senior citizens.  Baby toys can be a good option for keeping seniors active while encouraging hand-eye coordination.  Baby and infant toys are generally colorful, soft-cornered, easy to grasp, and mind stimulating.  Soft clay-like products made for children or special exercise items (such as balls) can be squeezed to help strengthen the hands.  Simple games can help seniors stimulate the mind.  Some elderly folks enjoy scrabble or card games which help with a variety of skills.  By checking with their doctor you can figure out what types of healthy aging homecare exercise a senior citizen can tolerate.  By encouraging a routine of resistance training exercise just one day a week can give elderly adults the strength to maintain their independence and to avoid injuries.

If you’re senior parent prefers to watch TV you should encourage them to watch programs on a cable channel like Animal Planet which sometimes has cute shows with baby animals or an elderly senior may prefer a classic musical which are good for all ages and can be funny and uplifting.  Here is a list of some great musicals, The Music Man (1962), The Sound of Music (1965), The Wizard of Oz (1939), Brigadoon (1954), and Singin’ in the Rain (1952).

Another good way for family members to interact with their elderly parents would be to ask questions about their childhood.  Here are a few good questions to start with:

1.       Who is their best friend and why?

2.       What games did they like to play?

3.       What was the best birthday present they ever got?

4.       Did they ever have a nickname?

5.       Put on a tape recorder or camcorder and save priceless memories to keep forever.  Add to it on each visit.

A lot of aging parents like visits from the grandchildren or a pet of yours from home.  Especially if your retired parents are confined to a home or an institution.  Many seniors really miss their pets.  We believe that one animal assisted therapy session of 30 minutes per week was effective in reducing loneliness.  There are significant benefits to old and young that might come from greater age integration.  If you don’t have the real thing we suggest you bring pictures and videos.

We at Comfort Keepers have a few activities and ideas for musical seniors.  You can try singing old-time songs like In the Good Ol’ Summer Time. Together you can search online for the words to hymns, early barbershop quartet songs, and classic camping tunes.  A highly rated campfire songbook on Amazon.com is Campfire Songs by Irene Maddox or you can look at the book The American Song Treasury:  100 favorites by Theodore Ralph.  Then you have your children’s tunes such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, How Much is that Doggie in the Window and Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

It is important for family members and caregivers to interact during their visits with an elderly client.  By interacting you will create a stronger brain and body connection.  When visiting with seniors at home or in an elderly care home, it’s important to bring up old memories, delight them with things that will engage their senses, and just have a little fun.  Enjoying visits with a senior will enrich two lives at once.
