A Few Helpful Hints for Our Senior Citizens and Their Caregivers to Prevent Accidents When Using the Stairs by Carol Carbutti the Owner of Comfort Keepers in Wallingford, CT

By Carol Carbutti

A set of stairs in the home can be a dangerous place for the retired elderly.   With a little fall prevention we can avoid serious in home injuries for our senior loved ones.  Stairs can create the potential for a serious injury which can lead to a long and painful recovery.  All caregivers and family members should check the stairs in the house and make sure they are as safe as possible for our senior clients who need to go up and down them daily.

Here are a few tips to help make climbing indoor stairs in a senior citizens home a little safer.  First you need to always use the handrails on both sides of the stairs and steps.  Make sure the handrails are long enough, they need to reach from the top of the staircase down to the last step at the bottom.   Also you need to make sure the railings are strong and secure.  Another important safety tip would be to have plenty of lighting at the top and bottom of the stairs.  It is very important to either remove or secure all rugs from your staircase to prevent slipping and falling.  All caregivers and household members should keep the stairs clear of all obstacles and clutter.  It is very important to remember not to store any items on the stairs.  Also it is very helpful at night to have nightlights in the bedroom, hall, top and bottom of the staircase and the bathroom.  Always wipe up any spills immediately since this will most likely cause the companion or an elderly senior to fall and seriously get hurt.

When you take your elderly senior outdoors you need to make sure there is sufficient lighting over all of the senior client’s porches and walkways.  Again use handrails on both sides of the stairs and steps.  Also check to make sure the handrails go from the top to the bottom of the stairs and that they are safe and steady.  Always keep the sidewalks and paths clear to prevent tripping.  If there are broken or chipped steps you need to alert someone to fix them as soon as possible.

The owner of Comfort Keepers of Wallingford, CT believes that safety at home is seriously important for our seniors.  Most accidents can be avoided if family caregivers and personal care companions take a moment to fix or move the obstacles in our elderly client’s way.  Many of Comfort Keepers hints are simple to do and take very little time to fix compared to a very long recovery from a serious fall.
